Seán MacCumhaills GAA Club hosted a memorable Awards Night last Saturday to honour the outstanding contributions and achievements of club members throughout 2024.

Eugene Gallagher, who has served as the club’s treasurer for the past 50 years, was the guest of honour on the night. Eugene, a legendary figure within Donegal and the wider GAA community, was celebrated for his immense dedication and service. Eugene received messages from across the globe, including a tribute from GAA President Jarlath Burns, and a surprise visit from All-Ireland-winning Donegal manager Brian McEniff. Seán MacCumhaills expressed deep gratitude to Eugene and his family, acknowledging his lasting impact on the club.

The esteemed Club Person of the Year award was presented to Lavina O’Reilly, a familiar face at MacCumhaill Park. Whether managing the club shop on match days, welcoming visitors, or ensuring the seamless running of Sunday night bingo, Lavina’s tireless efforts have been invaluable to the club. Her dedication and commitment were rightfully celebrated with this honour.

The Senior Ladies Team, managed by Shaun Boyce and assisted by Mary Bogle, Noel Doherty, John Sweeney, Eugene Gallen, Ciara Doherty, Bridgeen Gallen & Ciaran Roarty were honoured for their victory in the Junior B Championship. Medals were presented to the team in recognition of their success.

  • Young Ladies Player of the Year: Emily Boyce
  • Ulster Ladies All Star Winner: Abigail Temple Asokuh
  • Ulster Post Primary Schools All Star: Katie Dowds
  • 2024 U16 Donegal LGFA Ulster Finalist: Caoimhe McNulty

A special presentation was made to Oisin Gallen for his historic achievement in winning his first All-Star, marking a milestone for Seán MacCumhaills.

The club also celebrated its representation in Donegal’s Nicky Rackard All-Ireland Hurling victory. A presentation was made to Dylan Laverty, Conor Griffin, and Gavin Browne for their contributions to the team’s success.

The Senior Reserve Footballers, managed by Paul McCauley and assisted by Paul Patton and Damien Floyd, were presented with their medals for winning the Division 1B League.

Individual football and hurling awards included:

  • Senior Player of the Year: Fintan Griffin & Jamie Keegan
  • Young Senior Player of the Year: Conor McGinty
  • Reserve Player of the Year: Adam Lynch
  • Young Reserve Player of the Year: Alan Sproule
  • Hurler of the Year: Dylan Del Laverty
  • Young Hurler of the Year: Sean Brady Devanney
  • Third Team Player of the Year: James Bomber Lynch

In addition to club achievements, the event also recognised the accomplishments of Donegal Masters All-Ireland Plate Winners Mark Cannon, Patrick Hannigan, and Paul Patton, as well as All-Ireland All Army Winning Manager Rurai (Archie) McLaughlin.

The Awards Night was a fitting tribute to the dedication, talent, and community spirit that define Seán MacCumhaills GAA Club. As the club looks ahead to another year of sporting excellence, the night served as a reminder of the rich history and bright future of this remarkable community.
