A walker who suffered a serious leg managed to make her way back to her car before calling the rescue services for help this afternoon.

The woman is understood to have suffered a serious ankle fracture during the incident while out walking alone near Melmore in Downings.

She eventually managed to get back to her car where she raised the alarm to passers-by by sounding the horn on her car.

A member of the public came to the woman’s aid and immediately contacted the emergency services.

An ambulance treated the woman at the scene.

The emergency services then contacted Malin Head Coastguard who summoned the Rescue 118 helicopter to the scene at approximately 1.40pm.

The victim was then transported by the rescue helicopter immediately to Letterkenny University Hospital for immediate treatment.

The woman’s condition is not known at this time.
