Donegal County Council is set to pilot a new Athletics for Autism Programme.
The new programme will be in partnership with Donegal Sports Partnership and funded through the Healthy Ireland Programme.
The Athletics for Autism programme aims to engage children with autism in an athletics-based programme using a participatory and fun approach. The programme embraces activities related to fundamental sports skills, including running, jumping, and throwing and is particularly suitable for children of different abilities. Progress is measured individually, which is especially satisfying for children with limited abilities as they can see their improvement. This initiative aims to serve as a model for other sports clubs and organisations, demonstrating best practices in inclusive athletics. The programme provides practical coaching support, insights into necessary club infrastructure and sports equipment, and guidance on maintaining appropriate coach-to-athlete ratios.
Outlining the value of the project to the local community, Ms. Margaret Fitzgerald, Healthy Ireland Coordinator, Donegal County Council said, “Donegal County Council working in partnership with our Local Community Development Committee is committed to promoting the health and wellbeing of the people and communities of Donegal through the delivery of projects funded under the Healthy Ireland Round 4 Programme”.
Adam McGranaghan, Donegal Sports Partnership said, “Through this pilot, Donegal’s athletics clubs hope to create a more inclusive environment that meets the needs of children with autism and inspires similar efforts nationwide.”
Finn Valley Athletics Club Coach, Ann Slevin said, “Seeing the children engage, smile, and enjoy movement in a supportive environment is incredible, with each child bringing their unique strengths to the sessions”.
Tir Chonaill Athletics Club (Glenties) Coach, Bronagh Heverin said, “Participating in this pilot has allowed our club to watch with pride, as the children week on week, grow and learn while embracing the fundamentals of athletics, all while having fun.”
The pilot Athletics for Autism Programme is funded under the Healthy Ireland Programme, which is supported by the Dept. of Health.
