Arranmore pupil brings bright ideas to Brussels

Aibhín Gallagher, a 6th class student from Scoil Athphoirt on Arranmore, recently embarked on an exciting trip to Brussels after being named as a winner of an essay competition.

The competition, organised by Midlands North West MEP, Nina Carberry, which was open to 5th and 6th class students across the 15 counties of the Midlands North West constituency, challenged students to explore the question: “If you were an MEP, what would you do to make your community the best place to live for everyone?”

Aibhín’s essay, which highlighted the unique aspects of life on Arranmore, earned her the top prize, a visit to the European Parliament in Brussels.

During her trip, Aibhín had the opportunity to meet with MEP Carberry, who praised her creative vision and insightful ideas on community improvement and local development.

Aibhín also received a guided tour of the European Parliament, where she gained a first-hand understanding of how EU policies are shaped and how decisions made in Brussels have a direct impact on communities back home in Ireland.

The visit offered a rare behind-the-scenes look at the day-to-day work of MEPs, the legislative process, and the critical role that citizens, especially young people, play in European democracy.
