Over 900 drivers have been caught speeding in the first two days of An Garda Siochana’s Easter Bank Holiday Roads Policing Operation.

The detections took place between 7am on Thursday and all of Friday.

Some of the top speeds detected by Gardaí included a car that was 35 km/h over the limit at New Ross, Wexford – doing 115km/h in a 80km/h zone.

Some of the other biggest speed violations included a driver doing 84km/h in a 50km/h zone on the N54 at Latlorcan, Monaghan, and another motorist who was caught at 99km/h in a 60km/h zone on the R147 at Dunboyne, Meath.

“The heavy rainfall over the past two days is a reminder of the importance for motorists to reduce speed this bank holiday weekend. Road conditions are increasingly dangerous when wet,” Gardaí said in a reminder issued to the public.

“It should be noted however, no matter how good the road and weather conditions are, any increase in speed increases a driver’s likelihood of being involved in a serious or fatal road traffic collision.”
