A man charged in relation to the death of Eddie Friel has been further remanded in custody at Castlerea Prison.

James Spendley, 57, of St Cummin’s Hill, Killybegs appeared before Judge Sandra Murphy at Sligo District Court today.

Members of the late Mr Friel’s family were present in court.

Sergeant Derek Butler told the court that directions from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) are still being awaited. He asked for a further remand period.

Judge Sandra Murphy had refused bail at Sligo District on the previous Thursday, saying: “I am taking into account that there is a likelihood of danger to people in the community if Mr Spendley is released.

“It is necessary for me to refuse bail.”

Mr Friel was found deceased in his home at Harbour View Drive in Killybegs on Sunday, April 13. Spendley has been in custody since being arrested by Detective Garda Niall Brady in the early hours of Monday, April 14. He is charged with assault causing serious harm to Mr Friel. The offence is contrary to Section 4 of the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act, 1997.

It has previously been indicated to the court that further charges are expected to be brought against the defendant, and that Spendley is undergoing psychiatric consultation in prison.

Judge Murphy remanded the defendant on continuing custody at Castlerea Prison. He is to appear via videolink to Sligo District Court on May 15.
