An official online fundraiser has been launched to help the beleaguered owners of the Doagh Famine Village which was devastated by a fire at the weekend.

The hugely popular Inishowen tourist attraction was partially destroyed on Saturday by what appears to have been an accidental fire.

The full scale of the damage is still being assessed, but it is understood that at least two sections of the Famine Village have been fully destroyed. It has also been confirmed that the destroyed thatch buildings were uninsured as the owners, Pat and Majella Doherty, were unable to get cover.

However, it has been officially announced that a GoFundMe page has been launched in a bid to raise €100,000 to restore the popular attraction.

You can contribute to the fundraiser via this LINK.

“As many of you know, an extensive part of Doagh Famine Village was sadly destroyed by fire on Saturday May 3rd. We are heartbroken, but deeply grateful for the outpouring of support from near and far,” Mr Doherty said.

A GoFundMe has been set up by our good friend, John at Wild Alpaca Way, to help us begin the long road to rebuilding.”

As reported earlier, Mr Doherty also warned there were ‘fake pages’ trying to take advantage of this fire.

“This is the only official fundraiser, set up by someone we trust,” he added.

“Thank you again for your kind messages, offers of help and continued support. It means more than we can say. Please share this post to help us spread the word.”

Luckily no one was injured when the fire broke out, but the Famine Village will remain closed for an extended period as a result of the blaze.

Foul play is not being suspected as the cause of the fire at this time.

A notice was issued to customers over the weekend, with refunds being offered to anyone who has already purchased tickets with plans of visiting the village.

The village has been owned by the family of Pat and Majella Doherty for decades, and was first turned into a tourist attraction in the 1990s after Pat saw the potential in showcasing historical ways of living in Donegal.

You can find updates on the Doagh Famine Village Facebook page.
