Donegal County Council has decided not to grant a planning exemption to the owners of the Strand Hotel, Ballyliffin to operate an International Protection Accommodation Service (IPAS) Centre
The news was confirmed by Padraig Mac Lochlainn TD today.
As a result, a public meeting of concerned residents due to take place tonight has been cancelled.
The meeting was due to be held in St Mary’s Hall, Clonmany to discuss concerns over the arrival of asylum seekers in Ballyliffin village.
Commenting on the decision of Donegal County Council, Deputy Mac Lochlainn said: “This is the right decision and I am glad that all concerned have listened to the local community.”
Last month, the Department of Justice also confirmed it did receive an offer of accommodation in respect of the Strand Hotel, Ballyliffin, but the property “is no longer under consideration”. This was confirmed again by Deputy Mac Lochlainn today.
