American Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost has been elected as the 267th Pope of the Roman Catholic Church.
Taking on the papal name of Pope Leo XIV, he appeared on the balcony overlooking St Peter’s Square to bless the crowds gathered below.
“I would like this greeting of peace to reach all your hearts and families… and people around the world. May peace be with you,” Pope Leo XIV said.
Born in Chicago, Prevost (69) is the first ever Pope from the United States.
