The family of Terry Ponsonby, the beloved owner of the Friars Rest in Letterkenny, has said that his remains will be brought home next week.

Mr Ponsonby passed away suddenly in Spain earlier this week.

As the owner of two family-run chip shops, he was a prominent employer in the town and a well-respected businessman.

His passing has brought great shock and sadness to the local community.

“Terry was more than just the man behind the counter – he was the heart of the Friars, always ready with a smile, a story, and time for everyone,” said a tribute on Monday.

The Ponsonby family has said that Terry will return home sometime next week, with details to be confirmed.

The Friars Rest cafes will remain open as normal until further notice.

The family extended their thanks to the community for all the support and messages in recent days, saying: “Terry would be so proud and overwhelmed by the support from all his loyal customers. It’s a true reflection of the bonds he built over the years, and we’re deeply grateful.”
