A campfire is believed to have caused a gorse fire at Killahoey beach in Dunfanaghy yesterday afternoon.
Fire brigade units from Falcarragh and Letterkenny, assisted by local farmers, eventually brought the blaze under control.
Smoke from the fire billowed across the course at Dunfanaghy Golf Club for a time, making play difficult.
One golfer, who did not wish to be named, said the blaze took hold after some campers decided to burn rubbish, and spread quickly in the dry grass and gorse.
Meanwhile, a passerby had to extinguish an unattended campfire near the dunes at Rossnowlagh Beach last night. Luckily, it did not spread.
On Friday, Donegal County Council pleaded with landowners and the public to be careful when out and about and not to engage in anything which may start a fire.
The warning came as the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine has issued a Fire Danger Notice, Condition Orange, for all areas where hazardous fuels such as gorse, heather, dried grasses, and other vegetation exist.
The notice is in effect until midday tomorrow.
A spokesperson said “Landowners and members of the public are urged to be vigilant and to report any uncontrolled or unattended fires immediately to the fire service by dialling 999 or 112.”
