A former Donegal school teacher has pleaded guilty to 131 historic child sex abuse charges.

The man, who is in his 80s, appeared at Letterkenny District Court.

He is charged with offences that include sexual assault and indecent assault in the 1970s and 1980s.

A publication order, meaning that the accused man cannot be named to protect the anonymity of the victims at this time, continues to be in place.

All of the incidents took place in County Donegal and there are 18 different victims in the case.

Mr Patsy Gallagher, solicitor for the accused, confirmed that his client has signed a guilty plea.

Sergeant Jim Collins told the court that the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has consented for the accused to be sent forward to Letterkenny Circuit Court on a signed plea.

Some of the victims were present in court for the brief hearing before Judge Éiteáin Cunningham.

The accused man was present, but did not speak during his case.

Judge Cunningham, noting the DPP’s consent and the signed plea handed in, made an order returning the man to the Circuit Court.

Judge Cunningham administered the alibi warning and made a section 56 order relating to videos of interviews.
