Gardaí are continuing to question a man in his 50s who was arrested yesterday on suspicion of murdering Michael Gaine.
The 56-year-old sheep farmer has been missing from his farmyard near Kenmare in Co Kerry for eight weeks.
The man was arrested yesterday afternoon after gardaí confirmed on Saturday that materials found on Mr Gaine’s farm are partial human remains.
The man is being detained under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 at a garda station in Co Kerry and can be questioned for up to 24 hours.
Gardaí continue to carry out searches and technical examinations at lands at Carrig East in Kenmare.
Throughout the weekend, attention was set firmly on Mike Gaine’s farmyard, 8km from Kenmare.
The discovery of materials while slurry was being spread on Friday evening led to the area being designated a crime scene.
A huge examination and search of the farmyard and surrounding fields re-commenced, after the area was designated a crime scene.
The material found was confirmed to be human tissue, and more human tissue was recovered during the search.
There were sombre scenes, RTÉ reports, as that was removed in a hearse yesterday evening for tests that are expected to confirm the material is the partial human remains of Mr Gaine.
Michael Gaine, also known as Mike, has been missing from his farm in Kenmare since 20 March.
Initially, his disappearance was treated by gardaí as a missing person’s case.
That changed just over a fortnight ago when gardaí said they were satisfied Mr Gaine was dead and that they had re-classified his disappearance as a homicide investigation.
