A Public Consultation period will open this week on the Town Centre First Plan for Glenties.
The Plan is being prepared by Donegal County Council’s Regeneration & Development Team in conjunction with the Glenties Town Team and GM Design Associates in line with the new National Policy ‘Town Centre First – A Policy Approach for Irish Towns’.
The plan will be regeneration & renewal focused with a view to strengthening the role, image, vibrancy, vitality and resilience of Glenties town centre. It will put place-making at the centre of the value proposition for the town as a means of enabling and attracting investment and regeneration.
The process will commence with a first stage of Public Consultation to inform the preparation of the Draft Town Centre First Plan. This will open on Thursday 22nd May 2025 with a public Drop-In Event that will take place at the Market Hall, Main Street, Glenties, from 3.30pm – 7.30pm. The public consultation period will close on Friday the 6th of June 2025 at 4pm.
The Plan will be consultative, collaborative, evidenced and action focused so your participation is essential. Come along and talk to the consultants and share your thoughts, your ideas and your aspirations for your town centre.
Welcoming the launch of the first phase of public consultation on the Glenties Town Centre First Plan, the Cathaoirleach of the Glenties Municipal District, Cllr John Shéamais Ó Fearraigh emphasises the importance of the commencement of the Plan saying: “This presents a significant opportunity for a truly collaborative approach to transformational regeneration between Donegal County Council and the people of Glenties.”
“I would strongly urge the whole community to engage with the consultation process as it is crucial to hear the thoughts of our community and key stakeholders, including residents and visitors, community organisations, local interest groups and business representatives, to shape this vision for the future of Glenties.”
Chairperson of the Glenties Town Team, Isobel Sangha, invites the local community to think about their town centre and share their thoughts, ideas and aspirations for the future of Glenties. She says, “Local participation in the process is invaluable and will ensure that the Town Centre First Plan is suitably tailored to the specific needs of the community & local economy”.
Liam Ward, Director of Community Development and Planning Services, added, “Glenties is a bustling, friendly and attractive town with many points of interest in its distinctive cultural heritage, natural amenity and setting. The Town Centre First Plan will assist and support the local community in the renewal and regeneration of these assets in a sustainable manner and will greatly enhance the special significance of the town and its offering in the longer term.”
