Yellow boxes are at piers for a reason – Mulroy Coast Guard

Frustrated at motorists continuing to block pier access for their lifeboat, Mulroy Coast Guard has reissued an information video to highlight the dangers.

Despite their high-profile ‘think before you park’ campaign, vehicles were again abandoned on the slipway at Downings Pier over the past week during the good weather.

They could clearly be seen parked inside the yellow box there, some with boat and jet ski trailers in tow.

Watch the information video below:

“Yellow boxes are there for a reason, please be mindful,” a spokesperson said.

“For the purpose of this video, we parked cars in the yellow box to show how every car parked costs us vital seconds getting launched. Our only mission is to save lives.

“If you can keep the box clear, we might not be too late. The difference between life and death can be seconds, please be mindful where you park.”

Back in 2021, the launch of a west Donegal lifeboat was delayed for ten minutes due to bad parking. That incident occurred at Bunbeg Pier.

The top image shows unblocked access to the slipway. However, a van can be seen obstructing access (below).
