All children starting school this September are invited to visit their local library or Taobh Tíre Centre to pick up a My Little Library Book Bag.

Book bags are available in English and Irish.

All families are welcome to join the library too if they aren’t already members.

Nationally, the My Little Library initiative 2025 is expected to lead to tens of thousands of families in picking up their book bags and joining their local library.

Since its launch, an average of 20,000 4-5-year-olds have joined their local libraries annually.

The books and resources in the book bag support parents and their children in the
transition to primary school.

Speaking at the launch of the initiative in Donegal, Cathaoirleach of Donegal County Council, Cllr Niamh Kennedy stated that “The Little Library bag initiative is a fantastic way to support our youngest learners as they continue on their education journey into primary school. By giving every child starting school free books and resources, we are not only encouraging a love of reading but also building a strong foundation for lifelong learning. I’m delighted to see all our local libraries and Taobh Tíre centres in Donegal come together to support families in this way.”

My Little Library is run in association with the Local Government Management Agency and delivered by local authorities. It is a collaboration between the Department of Children, Disability and Equality, the Department of Rural and Community Development, and Local Government Ireland.
