More than 2,000 homes and businesses in south and south-west Donegal were left without electricity last night.

Due to heavy rain, thunder and lightning since late evening, power was out in Donegal Town, Killybegs, Ballyshannon, Bundoran and Ballintra.

At one stage, the ESB power check website stated 1,466 customers were affected in Ballyshannon, 691 in the Donegal Town area, as well as 263 in Killybegs.

Power was fully restored to most areas by midnight.
