Critically-acclaimed Donegal singer-songwriter Lara Sweeney-Doherty, aka LARAbEL, will unveil her debut single this Friday.
This new single, Playground, taken from her debut EP Squiggle, marks an exciting new chapter in her career.
In Playground, LARAbEL crafts a deeply personal and evocative song.
Describing the track, she said: “This song is about escapism and the freedom that comes with it. For me, as a child this was the outdoors. I was surrounded by growing up in such a beautiful area in Gaoth Dobhair, Donegal where it’s all a big playground.
“The playground in my adulthood has become a metaphor for where I go in my mind to escape reality, when there is no nature around me.
“It was also my best attempt at some sort of love song to the person who was there for me during a period when old trauma came back up, a reminder that I could escape and live in my own world when the outside world was too much.”
Beo Records are excited to present LARAbEL’s releases, with more singles to come in the next few months, along with gigs and listening parties in the lead up to the EP release in August.
At the age of 18, Lara moved to Dublin to pursue a music career, and has since graduated from BIMM Dublin with a Degree in Songwriting. She began busking on Gra on Street in 2020, and has gone on to perform at Glastonbury, Electric Picnic, and the 3Olympia Theatre, as well as selling out her first headline show in Whelan’s in 2024, and headlining Moya Brennan’s own musical night, Clubeo in Leo’s Tavern.
Having supported various acts such as David Keenan, Paddy Casey, and Hudson Taylor, LARAbEL, now 23 years old, has curated a distinct musical style that takes influence from a diverse tapestry of artists such as Ben Howard, Holly Humberstone, and Sinéad O’Connor.
