EirGrid, the operator and developer of the electricity grid, is working to transform the power system for communities in Donegal and across the North West.
EirGrid is responsible for ensuring a reliable, secure, and sustainable electricity grid as Ireland shifts to a renewable-powered future. The grid powers homes, communities and businesses, which in turn supports jobs, economic growth and regional development.
A move towards a cleaner electricity system is vital in our response to climate change. We are aiming for 80% of our electricity to come from renewable sources, in line with Government targets. This is ambitious, but necessary. Ireland has already made real progress with the amount of renewables now powering around 40 per cent of the electricity grid.
In the Programme for Government, the Government puts emphasis on prioritising the delivery of essential infrastructure projects, including energy, and makes a commitment to prioritise investment in the electricity system.
To achieve this, while at the same time maintaining a reliable power supply, the electricity system must undergo a major overhaul.
Sinead Dooley, Head of Public Engagement said: “As we work to make the electricity grid stronger in Donegal and the wider North West area, the benefits of transitioning to cleaner energy are clear, including economic opportunities and local investment.
“The transition to cleaner energy however, is complex, and while EirGrid has the expertise, commitment, and responsibility to lead this transformation, we can’t do it alone. It also requires support from local communities.
“EirGrid will work in partnership with communities in Donegal and across the North West as well as industry and Government to deliver a resilient, and renewable-ready electricity grid.”

As part of this engagement process, Donegal native Connell McLoone, has recently joined the team at EirGrid as community liaison officer for the North West.
Connell McLoone said: “I look forward to working with local groups and communities in the time ahead as EirGrid continues in delivering a cleaner energy future and resilient electricity grid.
I want to ensure that the views of local communities are reflected and that as we work together to transform the power system that the benefits of this are felt across Donegal and the wider North West region.”
