The total raised in this year’s Relay for Life Donegal has already gone above and beyond last year’s final figure!

Donations are still coming in and teams are still counting, but the estimated count on Sunday reached €154,358.

The 2024 event raised an impressive €150,025.54 in total, which brings the total amount raised in Donegal over all the Relays to a remarkable €1,979,358.

The voluntary committee has expressed huge levels of pride and gratitude at this year’s achievement.

Teams and volunteers braved the relentless weather on Saturday and Sunday to walk 24 hours for cancer care and research. Every step they took around the ATU campus field, whether in rain or shine, was a step forward for cancer patients and their families.

Chairperson of Relay for Life Donegal Seamus Devine, said volunteers were critical to the success of the relay, adding that the weather was a reflection of the relentlessness of cancer.

“Cancer is a 24 event, 365 days a year, rain, sun, shine, sleet, snow, whatever. We’ve had the mix of it,” said Seamus.

Daniel and Majella, joint patrons of Donegal Relay for Life, were present throughout the weekend, which featured a free concert from Daniel himself alongside a packed schedule of entertainment by local stars.

Among the highlights each year are the survivors’ lap and the symbolic luminaria, a light display that remembers all of those whose lives have been touched by cancer in one way or another.

The funds raised at Relay For Life are essential to enable the Irish Cancer Society to provide free, vital support services to people affected by cancer across Ireland and to fund groundbreaking cancer research.
