Despite a significant change in the weather, Sheephaven Sub Aqua Club members returned to the waters of Portnablagh on Sunday morning.
The shelter of the bay provided a welcome respite from the brisk westerly wind, allowing snorkelers to make their way along the perches and across to the far side. It proved to be an ideal training session for those preparing for the club’s annual Fin Swim from Burtonport to Arranmore Island later this summer.
While snorkelers made their way south above the water, the divers ventured north beyond the pier for a shore dive. The water temperature held steady at 12°C, and although visibility was poor, there was still plenty of marine life to enjoy, including lobsters, spider crabs, and lots of small fish.
Back on shore, JohnJoe Rowland concluded the morning with a debrief, paying tribute to former club member Kevin Boylan, who passed away in September 2023. The loss is still keenly felt within the club, and in his memory, a special Dive and Snorkel will be held next Sunday, 1st June at 10am. All club members—past and present—are warmly invited to join. The briefing will take place at the clubhouse in Downings at 10am.
