A woman has appeared in court over three separate theft incidents in Letterkenny.
Maria Kalanyos was before Letterkenny District Court charged with thefts from Tesco and Dunnes Stores in Letterkenny in March and April of this year.
Kalanyos pleaded guilty to the theft of groceries valued at €40.47 from Tesco on March 31, 2025.
The 45-year-old also tendered a guilty plea to a charge of stealing €17.20 worth of groceries from Dunnes Stores, Fort Lynne Shopping Centre on April 12, 2025.
The accused woman, of Riversdale Terrace, Oldtown, Letterkenny, also pleaded guilty to stealing various groceries, with a total value of €62.75, from Dunnes Stores, For Lynne Shopping Centre, on April 13, 2025.
Garda Sergeant Maurice Doyle outlined that on each occasion Kalanyos placed the items in her bag and passed all points of payment before exiting the stores.
The €17.20 worth of items from the April 12 theft at Dunnes Stores were not recovered, while the others were recovered and were fit for resale.
Mr Patsy Gallagher, solicitor for Kalanyos, said his client is a separate mother-of-two who was in a “destitute” state when these incidents occurred.
“The fact that she is before the court has had a devastating effect on her,” Mr Gallagher said.
Judge Éiteáin Cunningham noted that Kalanyos has no previous convictions, but noted that there were three incidents of similar offending in a short space of time.
Judge Cunningham convicted Kalanyos and fined her €200, allowing six months to pay.
