With the school academic year drawing to a close the Donegal Sports Star Committee is seeking nominations for the 2025 Awards. This is the time before the summer holidays for schools to look back over the year from September 2024 and pick out achievements that they deem worthy of a nomination.
As well as successes the Donegal Sports Star Awards Committee also attaches significant weighting to student participation levels and the spread of sports that a school provides.
Only achievements and participation levels in sport will be considered for the school year from September 2024 to June 2025. And judging will only be done for school specific competitions. There are nine schools categories
- Best Sports Boy and Girl Primary School
- Best Sports Boy and Girl Secondary School
- Best Primary School Small (<100 pupils)
- Best Primary School Large (>100 pupils)
- Best Secondary School
- Best Sports Teacher Primary
- Best Sports Teacher Secondary

Work has commenced over the last few months as the Committee prepares for the big 50th celebrations which will include a commemorative booklet detailing five decades of the Donegal Sports Star Awards . Along with that the focus is now also on encouraging schools to start thinking about nominations as the academic year draws to a close next month.
At a recent schools promotional event the 2024 Teacher Award winners John McFeely (Primary) and Paddy Carr (Secondary) both emphasised the importance of getting nominations in now as the school year draws to a close before the summer break. Awards Chairperson Grace Boyle also stressed that it is not just about the achievements as a significant weighting is also given to the level of participation in sport generally in schools. “We would ask Principals and those involved in sports in schools to look at what has happened from September 2024 and get the details jotted down now to submit to us when it is fresh in their minds.
