Donegal traffic Gardaí will be out in force on the roads this Bank Holiday weekend.
Their road safety initiative will remain in place until 7am on Tuesday.
They will be focusing on offences such as speeding, phone use, and driving under the influence.
Six people have died so far in the first five months of this year on the county’s roads.
However, last year was a particularly bad year. The county recorded one of the highest number of road deaths in Ireland, according to statistics published by the Road Safety Authority (RSA).
Seventeen people lost their lives on roads here in 2024, up from ten in 2023.
That number of fatalities was the highest in Co Donegal since 2010 when 19 people perished on the county’s roads.
The Road Safety Authority (RSA) and An Garda Siochána are urging all road users to never drive under the influence of alcohol.
The appeal comes as RSA analysis has found that over one third of driver fatalities with a toxicology result available during the years 2016-2020 had tested positive for alcohol.
The analysis shows a stark contrast between off-peak and peak hours. 70% of driver fatalities with a toxicology result available during off-peak hours (10pm-5.59am) had a positive toxicology for alcohol, compared to 21% during peak times.
