Fanad United 0-2 Raphoe Town
Fanad United Ladies were back in action tonight as they looked to bounce back from last week’s narrow defeat to Bonagee. They welcomed one of the league’s more experienced sides, Raphoe, in what proved to be another tightly contested 9-a-side clash. Despite the final scoreline, it was a game where Fanad could count themselves extremely unlucky not to take something from the match. They dominated large spells of possession, created the better chances and put in a tireless shift from start to finish. The opening half saw both sides cancel each other out in a fast-paced affair, with Fanad edging the chances but unable to find the breakthrough. Raphoe’s goalkeeper Aimee Gallagher was in inspired form, pulling off a string of impressive saves to keep the visitors level at the break. The second half followed a similar pattern with Fanad continuing to threaten, particularly through the hard-working duo of Rachel Friel and Clodagh Heron. However, against the run of play, a loose ball broke kindly for Raphoe and Alannah Kee found herself one-on-one with the Fanad keeper, calmly slotting home to give her side the lead. Fanad didn’t drop their heads and continued to push for an equaliser. But just as they looked to regain control, an unfortunate passage of play with two Fanad players down injured in midfield allowed Raphoe to break again, with Amelia McCullagh finishing off the move to make it 2-0 and secure the win.
It was a well-contested match with both teams giving their all, but it was Raphoe’s clinical finishing and their standout keeper that proved the difference on the night. Fanad United Ladies can hold their heads high after another spirited performance. The ladies final league fixture will be an away trip to Keadue, with full details to be confirmed. Congratulations to Bonagee on being crowned league champions after their win this evening.
