The mother of Private Sean Rooney is to sue the Irish state and the United Nations over alleged negligence that contributed to her son’s death.
24-year-old Irish solider Rooney was killed while on UN peacekeeping duties in Lebanon in December of 2022, when the UN convoy he was a part of came under fire from Hezbollah militants.
The Sunday Independent is reporting today that his mother, Natasha, has filed a civil case in the High Court against the Irish Defence Forces, the UN, Tánaiste and Defence Minister Simon Harris, and the Attorney General.
She is seeking damages related to her son’s death, relating to “…the failings by both the Irish Defence Forces and the United Nations,” her solicitor told the newspaper.
