Donegal ETB Society Golf Notes

Cruit Island was the venue for Myles Sweeney’s Captain’s Prize and the final outing of the Donegal ETB Golf Society for the 2024/25 season.

Although Tommy Greally had already secured the coveted Golfer of the Year award and Cup, it was still all to play for as the Captain’s Prize, the Mary Ann Kane Magnificent 7 Memorial Trophy and the Runner-up spot for the Golfer of the Year were still up for grabs.

Captain’s Prize

In the most testing weather conditions we encountered throughout the year, only 1pt separated the top five golfers and indeed only 5pts separated the top 10 golfers.  Deirdre O’Toole secured the Captain’s Prize on 34 pts just edging out Golfer of the Year, Tommy Greally on a B.O.T. Charlie Cannon, John Bosco Gallagher and Paddy McDaid all finished on 33pts with Charlie getting 3rd place on a B.O.T. from John Bosco.

Mary Ann Kane Magnificent 7 Memorial Trophy

In the race for the Magnificent 7 Memorial Trophy, seven golfers had a realistic chance of taking the prize. This competition involves the cumulative Stableford scores gained over the course of the season at ‘Signature’ holes chosen by the Captain at each outing.

Golfer of the Year, Tommy Greally secured the trophy by picking up a very impressive par and 3 points on the tricky 6th hole Par 3 to finish on 13 points, just edging out Marcel McCafferty on 12pts.

With 1st place already secured by Tommy Greally, Paddy McDaid, who had been in 5th place at the start of the day, secured 2nd place. Marcel McCafferty finished 3rd with John McIvor and Aidan Guthrie completing the top five places.

The retired staff category prize went to Jim McGlynn with 31pts. The Past Captain’s prize went to Marcel McCafferty on 32pts. Aidan McCrossan and John McIvor secured the front and back 9 prizes with 18pts each.

As the outgoing Captain, Myles Sweeney presented the various prizes, he congratulated all the prize winners throughout the year, especially his former colleague, Deirdre. Myles thanked his fellow Committee members for all their help during his year as Captain, Cruit Island Golf Club for their hospitality on the day and the Midway Bar & Restaurant in Dungloe for providing the Captain’s meal. Myles final act as Captain was to announce Breid Kelly as Captain for the 2025/26 season and wished her every success.

On a personal note, I wish to thank the various Social Media and Newspaper outlets who published our reports and photographs during the year and also to the various Golf Clubs we attended. We are truly spoiled for choice in Co. Donegal.

And so another hugely successful season comes to a close for the Donegal ETB Golf Society.
