Main pic: Gardaí on patrol in Letterkenny during last year’s rally.
Gardaí are reported to be bringing in 120 extra officers as well as 25 unmarked patrol cars for next weekend’s Donegal Rally.
A spokesperson for King of the Cone, who organise controlled diffing competitions, said they are working An Garda Síochána ahead of the event which will draw thousands of visitors to the county.
“We met with them a few weeks ago alongside the rally committee, the County Council and other stakeholders where they revealed a few insights on this year’s plans,” they posted on their social media accounts.
“120 extra garda from Dublin are due to arrive in the county on Wednesday for a briefing. They will be on the roads from Thursday morning with a zero tolerance attitude enforced.”
They also stated 25 extra unmarked patrol cars also set to be on the roads for the weekend.
“We were told anyone not abiding by the law will be faced with increased fines to cover the cost of the operation. One example we were given was anyone caught redlining their car will be handed a €500 fine.”
Officers will be patrolling Letterkenny on foot and on bicycles throughout the weekend. “Anyone caught breaking the law will be heavily punished, this year offenders will be made an example of,” they concluded.
This morning, Gardaí stated neither dangerous driving nor anti-social behaviour will be tolerated.
As we reported at the weekend, there will be a number of road closures and public transport changes.
