Young man caught speeding at 137kph in 60kph zone in dad’s BMW

June 23, 2025

A young man caught doing 137kph in a 60kph in his father’s BMW car has been sent on a driving course.

Ryan Ridge was nabbed by Gardai traveling at more than twice the speed limit at Port Road in Letterkenny on June 19th last.

He appeared at Letterkenny District Court accompanied by his father.

Garda Sergeant Jim Collins said the 22-year-old was intercepted by Gardai and that there was luckily not much traffic on the road at the time.

Sergeant Collins said the driver stopped immediately when caught by Gardai and was fully apologetic.

Mr Patsy Gallagher, solicitor for the accused of Rathcavan Drive, Ballymena, Co Antrim, suggested to the court that perhaps it would be a good idea if his client undertook the Pro Social Driving Course.

Judge Eiteain Cunningham addressed the court and said the speed was certainly not acceptable and that she did not want any confusion about the issue.

She adjourned the case until November 24th to allow for the course to be completed as well as to examine if a similar course could be undertaken in Northern Ireland.

She also ordered Ridge to pay €250 towards the cost of the course.
