Gardaí are investigating a disturbing incident in which a Downings resident found a burglar asleep in their home in the early hours of yesterday morning.

They responded to a report of a burglary at a house in the area of Larganreagh (on Carrigart road on way into Downings) shortly after 4.05am  after the homeowner discovered a man lying upstairs.

“He woke him and the man became aggressive but did leave the house, taking a gear bag belonging to the homeowner as he left,” Garda Grainne Doherty said.

It is believed that entry may have been gained to the house via a downstairs toilet window.

“We appeal to anyone who may have been in the area between 3am and 4.30am with a dash-cam to make the footage available to us. If anybody observed a man on foot in that area in the early hours of Monday morning, we ask them to contact Gardaí in Milford on 074 9153060.”

The Garda Confidential Line may also be contacted on 1800 666 111.
