Gardaí have made an appeal to dog owners after an attack left one sheep dead near Carrigart.
The incident, involving a number of dogs, occurred in the High Glen area recently.
“We wish to remind dog owners of the harm their pets can cause if let roam free or unsecured and not kept under effectual control,” a garda spokesperson said.
“With dog ownership comes responsibility. Secure your dog, have it microchipped and registered with your vet. Please keep your family pet under effective control.”
Gardaí in Milford can be contacted on 074 9153060. The Garda Confidential line may also be reached on 1800 666 111.
Dog owners are reminded that, particularly during lambing season, huge stress and trauma is caused to sheep by marauding dogs.
Owners can be held liable for damages and face prosecution in the courts if their pet attacks animals on another person’s land. Farmers are also within their rights to shoot any animal that is worrying their livestock.
Prosecution under Section 9 of Control of Dogs Act 1986 could result in a month in prison and/or a €600 fine.
Donegal County Council can also issue fixed penalty notices to owners under the Control of Dogs Act.
