A group of students from Loreto Milford recently helped erect fencing in order to protect delicate sand dunes in Fanad.
They, along with the Fanad Coastal Group / Grúpa Cósta Fhánada, recently installed chestnut fencing, supplied by the Donegal County Council Coastal Unit, at Rinboy, Ballyhiernan, to trap sand and protect the dunes from coastal erosion.
“Sand dunes are more than just sandy hills—they are vital coastal defenders, protecting against erosion and providing habitats for wildlife,” a spokesperson for the group said.
“But human activities like trampling, sliding down dunes, wild camping, and roaming dogs can cause lasting damage. Together, we can preserve these natural coastal treasures”.
How to Help:
- Stick to designated pathways
- Avoid walking or running on dunes
- Follow local signage
- Observe wildlife from a respectful distance
