The spirited story of Sliabh Liag Distillers will be hitting the big screen this July as Donegal filmmaker Paul McGuckin’s ‘Still, he waits’ premieres at the Galway Film Fleadh.
The visually stunning film follows James Doherty and his dream to build a whiskey distillery in Donegal with his wife Moira.
James’ quest to reclaim Donegal’s distilling heritage provides for fascinating viewing.
His journey, which started in Hong Kong, finishes in the homeland of his parents who, like many, were forced to emigrate to England in search of work.
‘Still, he waits’ brews up James’ deep-rooted desire to belong to one place, to find his true home. And at the centre of this is the strikingly beautiful building he constructed in Ardara to house the family distillery.
Paul McGuckin, a lecturer at ATU Donegal, has been an image maker for 20 years – starting in photography before progressing to film.
Three years in the making, ‘Still, he waits’, is Paul’s first film.
James and Moira said: “Filmmaker Paul McGuckin initially joined us to capture some archival footage but saw the potential for something bigger. The result is a documentary centred on our founder James Doherty’s homecoming and the road less travelled to bring back a once lost style of Irish Whiskey making.
“We’re honoured to have it premiere at the Galway Film Fleadh in the Pálás Cinema on Friday, 11th July – a milestone that reflects the journey we’ve been on thus far…”
The film’s premiere will take place on Friday 11th July at 6pm in Pálás Screen 3. See the Galway Film Fleadh programme at : www.galwayfilmfleadh.com
