A trio of brothers from Gweedore have won Ireland’s biggest currach race for the third time.
The team of Simon, Ronan and Michael O Dómhnaill have triumphed in the challenge again after prior wins in 2021 and 2023.
Currach racing provides a unique challenge as crews are using traditional Irish boats, with many different types of currachaí, including two, three and four-hander boats racing against eachother with a handicap system keeping things equal.
The unique challenge also has a unique course – the race sees crews navigate their way around a 7 kilometer course, inbetween the islands of Colt, St. Patrick’s and Shenick Island just off the coast of Skerries.
To win the challenge, the crew must land on Shenick Island and retrieve a numbered flag, before a charge back to the finish line on the South Strand.
The O Dómhnaill brothers defeated a 19-boat field to claim the top step on the podium and the Denis Guiney Perpetual East Coast Currach Rowing Championship Cup.
