Donegal Sensei Mary Lynn O’Neill delivered a standout performance at the recent WUKF Irish Open held in Waterford, showcasing exceptional skill and determination against a highly competitive international field.

The event welcomed athletes from seven countries and 25 clubs, making it one of the most fiercely contested tournaments of the season.

Representing her Donegal School of Shotokan Karate School solo, Sensei Mary rose to the challenge with remarkable success—claiming four medals across both Kata and Kumite disciplines.

In the Kata events, she impressed judges with her technical precision and powerful delivery, securing one Gold and one Silver medal. The Silver came heartbreakingly close to Gold, falling short by just 0.2 points, a margin that highlights both the intensity of the competition and the excellence of her performance.

Her dominance continued in Kumite, where she demonstrated sharp timing and tactical prowess. Sensei Mary captured two Gold medals in both Sanbon and Ippon Kumite, solidifying her reputation as a versatile and formidable competitor.

Despite not competing as part of a larger team, Sensei Mary’s individual achievements propelled her club to 15th place on the overall medal table, surpassing many larger teams with multiple athletes.

Her success at the WUKF Irish Open not only brings honor to her dojo but also serves as an inspiration to aspiring martial artists across the country.
