Fianna Fáil councillor Martin McDermott has been elected as the new Cathaoirleach of the Inishowen Municipal District for the coming year.

His party colleague Cllr Fionán Bradley was elected to the role of Leas-Cathaoirleach at today’s AGM.

Cllr McDermott previously held the title of Inishowen Cathaoirleach in 2019.

Following today’s meeting, Cllr McDermott said that he was “absolutely delighted” to be elected Cathaoirleach of the Inishowen Municipal District.

“It is a great honour to hold this position, and I want to express my sincere thanks to my colleagues for their support in electing me,” he said.

“A very special thank you to my family—especially my wife Sheila and our daughters Alishia and Sophie—for their unwavering support and encouragement.

“I look forward to serving all the people of Inishowen over the coming year, and I am committed to working hard on your behalf.”

Inishowen councillor Paul Canning was elected as Cathaoirleach of Donegal County Council yesterday, with Letterkenny councillor Donal ‘Mandy’ Kelly supporting him in the role of Leas Cathaoirleach.

As of today, new Cathaoirleachs have been appointed in all MDs for 2025/26. They are:

Donegal MD – Cllr Michael Naughton (FF)
Glenties MD – Cllr Michael McClafferty (IND)
Inishowen MD – Cllr Martin McDermott (FF)
Letterkenny MD – Cllr Ciaran Brogan (FF)
Lifford-Stranorlar MD – Cllr Martin Harley (FG)
