The untimely passing of Robert O’Brien, of McNeely Villas in Oldtown, Letterkenny on Monday has been met with deep sadness and sorrow in the local community.

Robert (66), died in the wonderful and compassionate care of staff in Medical 3, Letterkenny University Hospital after a noticeably short illness.

A jovial character, Robert had many friends in the locality and was well known and highly regarded for his friendly, gentle demeanour and helpful manner.

Born in Glasgow, Robert moved back to Donegal in the early 70’s with his family and they settled into the close-knit community of McNeely Villas.

He attended National School in Glasgow and on his return to Ireland he was a student at Letterkenny Vocational School, Ard O’Donnell.

Robert later gained employment in O’Donnell’s Bakery, a travelling shop with his friend, Andy Lochlainn and UNIFI textured yarns, where he made many friends and acquaintances over the years of his employment.

Away from work Robert enjoyed nothing more than a social gathering of friends and family most notably at ‘The Hideout’, ‘The Drum Bar’ and in more recent years at his favourite hostelry, ‘The Station House Hotel’.

His gentle disposition endeared him to many.

Robert had many interests in life including sport, country n’ western music and soaps on television.

He was a big follower of Donegal GAA and revelled in their All-Ireland success’ of 1992 and 2012.

Over the years he accumulated a fine collection of tapes and records and among his favourite singers were Charlie Pride, Johny Cash and Kenny Rogers. Robert was also known to be called up for a song on his nights out.

In his youth he had a moped bicycle that he loved to take out to his cousins in Listillion.

He was also very handy repairing electronic equipment and gadgets in his spare time.

He enjoyed spending time with his good friend, the late James ‘Busty’ McMonagle repairing washing machines, tumble dryers and other household equipment.

Family was especially important to Robert, and he was generous and kind to all including his beloved nieces and nephews. He loved nothing more to spend time in the company of his siblings and their families.

Robert was more than just an older brother; he was a protector, guide, and best friend.

His mother, Vera, whom he lived with all his life, passed away on March 5, 2016, and this left a big void in Robert’s life.
His father, Patrick, died on March 3, 1981.

Predeceased by his parents, Patrick, and Vera, he will be sadly missed by his brother, Pat (Phil) Dublin, sister Margaret (Russ) North Carolina, Paul (Dorrie) Derry, Angela (C.J) The Grange. Glencar, Letterkenny.

Robert will also be sorely missed by his loving nephews, nieces, aunts Madge O’Donnell (England) and Eileen McGonagle (Glasgow) and, and a wide circle of family, friends, and neighbours.

The remains reposed at the home of his sister, Angela, and C.J. McGinley, 7 The Grange. Glencar, Letterkenny F92XPF5.

His funeral will take place today, Thursday, July 3rd, in St Eunan’s Cathedral at 1pm, followed by burial in the family plot at New Leck graveyard.
