Donegal film director Gerard Lough will be sharing what he’s learned for the first time at a two day filmmaking workshop to be held at the Regional Cultural Centre in Letterkenny on August 5th and 6th.
Lough’s experience ranges from the movies Spears (2022) and Night People (2015) as well as eight short films and thirteen music videos.
Since it is designed for people new to filmmaking, the workshop will largely focus on how to make and release a professional short film.
As Lough explains, “Making a short film before you dive into a feature film is the equivalent of the old saying you walk before you run. Without the benefit of experience from making a short film, you can easily get overwhelmed by the long and arduous process of making a feature. A short will also prepare you for most of the challenges you’ll face getting a movie made.”

The many subjects covered will include all the essential and practical things somebody needs to know how to make a film, from writing a screenplay to the first screening for an audience.
As Lough explains, “The filmmaking process has a lot of myths and misconceptions that this workshop will cut straight through in an easy to understand way.”

The event will also include a free screening of Gerard’s latest short film Waiting for Magic Hour (2024) on the big screen as well as a demonstration with experienced actors to show how a scene is staged and professionally recorded.
