Young Killybegs driver back on track after sitting Leaving Cert!

After the break for exams it was back to Mondello at the weekend for young Killybegs driver, Jayden McBrearty, for Round 5 & 6 of the Irish Championship Circuit Racing.

At the midpoint in the ICCR Mini Championship, he now finds himself in contention for championship honours in the highly competitive championship.

Friday was free practice day, this gave Jayden a chance to get back into the car and make any set up changes. Jayden was joined by Alex Denning who is competing in the GT3 series driving a Lamborghini. His experience and advice was of great benefit to Jayden. Track conditions on Friday were dry.

Saturday was a rest day with racing starting on Sunday morning.

Sunday morning started with a very positive start. Things were looking good in the first 2 sectors of the final lap, but it didnt come together. Jayden was held up on his flying lap behind 2 slower cars and despite them receiving a blue flag, they still impeded the Killybegs driver. Nonetheless it left Jayden 4th in Qualifying going into Race 1.

Race 1 started with rain that spiced things up on the grid. A car stalled on the line, causing mayhem as 3 cars further back collided whilst trying to avoid the stalled car! This triggered a complete restart.

On the 2nd attempt the top 4 got away evenly. Jayden pushed on, setting fastest lap times early on in the race.

This left Jayden passing 3rd past Hoey and in the hunt for 2nd. The pressure got to the front cars and one of the cars made a mistake running wide. Jayden didn’t miss the opportunity and kept the push on to take second and caught first place fast but ran out of laps. Jayden finished race 1 in P2 having started from P4.

Race 2 brought more drama. Circuit racing wheel to wheel action can bring all kinds of drama even if you’re driving well. On the damp track on lap 2 a challenging competitor rolled at turn one causing the race to be red flagged (halted)

A full restart again worked to Jayden’s benefit. Jayden was off and flying with more impressive times, Jayden drove a fantastic race holding P2 comfortably while chasing down the race leader by setting fastest times again. The countdown was the only thing that stopped Jayden from catching P1 but P2 was another great finish.

Jayden was joined with some of his sponsors and any of their associates this weekend again. This years sponsors include The Stables Motorsport Centre, Pod-Track, Mooney Boats, Toolforce.ie, Speedcar IRL & UK, KER Group, TrailerStuff.ie, TC Promotions, CBM SIgns.ie, BAHCO, Finoil, John Autos and JFS Crash Repairs
