Concerns over respiratory impact of traffic jams in Twin Towns

Donegal County Council has gained funding to begin air quality monitoring in Ballybofey and Stranorlar.

The project comes amid concerns over air pollution caused by cars and HGVs idling in the Twin Towns every day.

Councillor Patrick McGowan said he believed that no other town in the county sees the volumes of HGV traffic passing through day and night.

Speaking at the Lifford-Stranorlar MD meeting today, he said: “It’s an obvious town to be under threat by poor air quality because there is no bypass.

“There are vehicles coming from Limerick, Galway, Sligo, heading up to Derry, Letterkenny or Inishowen.

“They are going so slow, they are starting and stopping on hills.”

Cllr McGowan proposed that the monitor should be installed at Ballybofey Garda Station.

He added that it was a “crying shame” that a monitoring system previously installed in Stranorlar was never concluded.

“Quite a few people living in the town are saying it’s (traffic) adding to respiratory problems and other problems,” Cllr McGowan said.

“It’s something that should be highlighted when pushing for the bypass. It’s information that could come in very useful later on.”
