A Letterkenny councillor has proposed that the Manorcunningham roundabout should get a revamp.
The suggestion came from Councillor Donal ‘Mandy’ Kelly this week as he also called for urgent maintenance works in the area.
“It seems the trees on the roundabout are growing very tall, is there an opportunity down the line, that we look at revamping it, and even putting a structural design on it to make it more attractive?” Cllr Kelly asked the council this week.
“It could be an opportunity to engage with the local schools Drumoghill, Magherabeg and Ray to get the locals’ views on this and to give the children an opportunity to maybe lead out on the design,” he added.
Cllr Kelly said he was aware that funding could be an issue, but urged the council to consider the possible funding streams.
Cllr Kelly also raised a motion with the Letterkenny-Milford Municipal District on Tuesday seeking a clean-up of each of the roundabout’s islands on the Derry side, Lifford side and on the dual carriageway right into the Dry Arch roundabout.
He states that there are weeds coming up on the islands, the verges of the dual carriagway are becoming untidy and that debris on the hard shoulders is posing dangers to cyclists.
He stressed that work should be carried out late in the evenings or in the early hours of the mornings to avoid disrupting traffic.
David McIlwaine, Senior Executive Engineer, Roads, confirmed that Cllr Kelly’s suggestion on the roundabout redesign will be taken back to Transport Infrastructure Ireland.
An overall assessment will be carried out in the area to establish what maintenance works can be carried out within the budgets that are available. Councillors were also told that works are planned to be carried out in the area around the Dry Arch roundabout in the near future.
