Work is due to get underway on the long-awaited Carrigart to Downings greenway path next month.
The project will add a 2.5km shared footpath for pedestrians and cyclists along the R248.
Phase 1, which secured €500,000 in funding in 2022, covers 1.5km from the entrance to the Rosapenna Pavilion to the junction with local road L1042, just under 1km from Carrigart.
Members of the Letterkenny-Milford Municipal District were told this week that works are expected to commence in mid-August and there is a deadline for completion by the end of 2025.
Significant progress has been made on the shared footpath project over the last quarter. The council said that landowner agreements are ongoing, and a tender clarification meeting has already taken place with the selected contractor.
Donegal County Council has lodged another application to the Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme (ORIS) for Phase 2 of the project, which will complete the path into Carrigart.
A decision on the application for an additional €500,000 is expected in November.
In the meantime, the council is engaging with landowners for Phase 2.
“It’s fantastic news for the area, it’s going to be of huge benefit to Carrigart and Downings, not just for tourists, but for locals and long-term residents,” said Councillor Declan Meehan.
“It’s been a long time coming, it’s fantastic to finally see actual work progressing and commencing now in August.”
