Residents plea for traffic calming at Bunlin Bridge

Donegal County Council is set to carry out an assessment on Bunlin Bridge outside Milford amid calls for extra measures to slow traffic.

The narrow bridge on the Cranford road is a busy link between Milford and Downings, Carrigart and Cranford.

Councillor Pauric McGarvey said that, for some motorists, it “seems to be a race who can get over it first”.

On behalf of local residents, Cllr McGarvey raised a motion with the Letterkenny-Milford MD calling for traffic calming measures on the approach to the bridge from both directions.

“Residents contact me about braking, screeching tyres and horns daily,” Cllr McGarvey told the council at this week’s meeting.

He noted that concerns worsen when frosty and wet conditions make the bridge dangerously slippery.

In response to the motion, Senior Roads Engineer David McIlwaine stated that a safety scheme with additional signage, road lining, and ladder markings had already been implemented at Bunlin bridge. He added that a further assessment could be conducted to identify if additional measures are needed, and if so, an application for low-cost accident funding could be submitted.
