Malin Head has recorded its highest-ever temperature in the 140-year history of the weather station.
Yesterday the mercury reached 27.6 degrees celsius at Malin Head, the first temperature record at the station in almost 70 years.
That previous record was set on August 24th 1955, when a high of 27.1 degrees was recorded at Malin Head, months after the weather station buildings which are still standing there today were constructed.
Malin Head produced weather data well before a formal weather station was established there however, with records stretching back to 1885.
Back then, employees of Lloyd’s Insurance Company of London manned and operated a local coastal signal station, where they prepared and transmitted weather reports.
Yesterday also saw the hottest temperatures of the year recorded in many parts of the country, the hottest being recorded at Mount Dillon in Roscommon where temperatures reached a scorching 31.1 degrees celsius.
