Gardaí halted two motorcyclists speeding in the Donegal Town area yesterday.
The bikers were caught at excessive speeds of both 157km/hr and 134km/hr.
One of the motorcyclists who also had a pillion passenger was observed overtaking at speed, gardaí said.
“The motorcycle was seized under Section 109(a) of the Road Traffic Act 1961. Under this legislation, in order to get your vehicle back, you must apply to the Judge of the District Court. Fixed charge penalty notices will issue also,” said a garda statement.
“The other motorcyclist was stopped as they were detected overtaking on a continuous white line in excess of the speed limit. A Fixed Charge Penalty Notice will be issued.”
Both motorcyclists eventually stopped after Gardaí activated their lights and sirens, but not immediately.
Gardaí are reminding all drivers to always remain alert and be aware of your surroundings/noise/road ahead and behind by regularly checking your mirrors.
“Speed is a factor in half of all motorcycle road deaths so please stay within the legal speed limits and don’t become a statistic,” they said.
