Water disruption in peak holiday season ‘not just inconvenient, it’s unacceptable’

A Donegal County Councillor has called for Uisce Eireann to provide urgent answers and investment as water issues in Falcarragh may not be fixed today.

Residents in the Dunfanaghy, Falcarragh and Gortahork areas have experienced outages and issues since Friday.

Councillor Michael McClafferty says Uisce Eireann’s handling of the situation has been hugely disappointing.

“Let’s take a moment to think about our local businesses. It’s peak holiday season, and it was heartening to see our towns full of life this weekend — businesses that have struggled all winter were finally seeing some hope. And just as things pick up… the water goes off,” he said.

“Pubs, cafés, shops, hairdressers, holiday rentals are all unable to provide basic services. This is not just inconvenient, it’s unacceptable. Water is a basic human need, and Uisce Éireann (Irish Water) has a duty to provide it.”

Cllr McClafferty also expressed frustration that a meeting between county councillors and Uisce Eireann on Monday last was cancelled, giving local representatives no opportunity to make queries on current issues.

“We are currently investigating reports of a supply disruption to An Fál Carrach and surrounding areas in Co. Donegal,” said the latest update from Uisce Éireann on Saturday.
