July 15, 2025

A student has avoided a conviction but ordered to make a donation to charity after being caught with €245 of cocaine in Letterkenny.

James Meredith was stopped and searched by Gardai at Letterkenny Community Centre on January 18th last.

When searched he was found in possession of a quantity of cocaine.

The 20-year-old appeared at Letterkenny District Court this week charged that on January 18th, 2025 at Letterkenny Garda Station, New Line Road, Letterkenny, had unlawfully in his possession a controlled drug, to wit,  namely cocaine .

The charge is Contrary to Section 3 of the Misuse of Drugs Act 1977 and Contrary to 27 (1) of the Misuse of Drugs Act 1977 as substituted by Section 6 of the Misuse of Drugs Act, 1984.

The court was told that Meredith, of College Park, Letterkenny, has no previous convictions.

Solicitor for the accused, Mr Frank Dorrian, said members of Meredith’s family including his mother and father were in court.

He said his client was an advertising and marketing student who originally came from Zimbabwe.

Judge Eiteain Cunningham said this was a significant amount of cocaine.

Mr Dorrian agreed and said this was indicative of his client’s usage.

Judge Cunningham said she was prepared to afford Meredith an opportunity but was cognisant of the amount and type of drug.
She added the court would require a donation of €500 to charity and the charity chosen was the Donegal Hospice.
The donation was paid into court but Judge Cunningham warned Meredith that he would not be afforded another chance if he came before the court again on a similar charge.
