It has been announced that the remains of Bishop Eamonn Casey have been removed from Galway Cathedral.
The disgraced former Bishop passed away in 2017, but revelations made in a 2024 RTÉ documentary shone light on his alleged sexual abuse of children during his time as Bishop of Galway.
Casey initially made worldwide headlines back in 1992, when he resigned from his role as Bishop following a scandal where he had fathered a child to an American mother.
Last year’s RTÉ programme, Bishop Casey’s Buried Secrets, revealed allegations made against the former Bishop, including from his niece, Patricia Donovan, who alleged that Casey sexually abused her throughout her childhood.
The shocking revelations prompted internal discussions by members of the Galway Diocese into Bishop Casey’s interment within Galway Cathedral, following public outcry.
Today it was announced that his remains have been removed from the Cathedral and were entrusted to the care of his family.
In a statement released to media this afternoon, the Galway Diocese said the following:
“With the assent and co-operation of members of the late Bishop Eamonn’s family and following prayers for the dead, his mortal remains have been moved from the Cathedral Crypt and entrusted to their care. It is their express wish that the arrangements they have made for Bishop Eamonn’s final resting place remain private.”
