As the countdown continues to the All-Ireland Football Final, a group of Donegal supporters are making their travel plans to reunite for their beloved bacon butty tradition once more!
The McCreerys from Ballyshannon, the O’Reillys from Rann na Feirste, the Bonners from Glasgow, and Kathy McGee from all the way over in San Diego have a tradition of gathering in Ranelagh before any big Donegal games at Croke Park.
The gang all united again for the semi-final, and are planning to reconvene to hopefully see Sam come back to the hills of Donegal again.
Since 2012, it’s been a tradition for the families to gather at Anne McCreery’s house in Ranelagh for bacon butties before heading to Croker.
A cherished photo on the steps of the house is always part of the day.
Next Sunday will be another photo to treasure.
Among the gang is Kathy McGee is from Ballyshannon, who is now living in San Diego. She flew over specifically for the semi-final and, as soon as the final whistle blew on 13th July, she immediately booked her flight for the final!
The Bonner family are originally from Arranmore but most now living in Glasgow and one brother is living in Kerry. Now, 3 of the 4 Kerry ones support Donegal!
The McCreery family are from Ballyshannon, and Susan, originally from Rann na Feirste, married into the McCreery family.
“We are all going to Dublin for the final – including the Scottish gang. Whether we secure tickets or not is another story. The hunt is on!,” says Susan.
“Fingers crossed for a great day next Sunday and please God we get to bring Sam back to the hills of Donegal again.”
