Donegal County Council’s Cultural Division has paid tribute to well-known Letterkenny librarian Gavin Burke, who passed away on Sunday at the age of 49.

Mr Burke, of Newtowncunningham, passed peacefully in the caring hands of the staff in the Donegal Hospice, surrounded by his loving family.

“Gavin personified what it means to be a public librarian,” said a tribute from his colleagues at Donegal County Library.

“With a warm smile and pleasant nature he went to great lengths to help everyone who walked through the door of the library. His passing will leave a big void in our team. At dheis Dé go raibh a anam.”

Another tribute from the Regional Cultural Centre in Letterkenny said that Gavin brought “warmth, humour, and conversation wherever he went” and will be greatly missed by all in the Library Service.

The Central Library Letterkenny will close on Tuesday 22nd July from 11.00am to 2.00pm as a mark of respect for Gavin’s Funeral Mass.

He is survived by his parents, Annette & Martin, brothers Gary, Brian (Grace), Shane (Caroline), Martin (Neasa), twin sisters Elaine (Frankie) & Edel (Keith) & Dearbhla and a wide circle of family, friends & neighbours.

Gavin was one of four individuals remembered as Donegal County Councillors adjourned their plenary meeting this morning as a mark of respect to people who passed away in the county in recent weeks.

Mayor of Letterkenny-Milford Cllr Ciaran Brogan led the tributes to Gavin, who has family members employed at the council.

“It’s a difficult time for his family and indeed our own staff in the council who worked with him. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Burke family for the late Gavin, may he rest in peace,” said Cllr Brogan.
